(a)What do you understand by external threats?

- External threats are possible danger that comes from outside a particular kingdom or empire. It is usually in a form of foreign invasions. For example, when Xiongnu, one of the most feared nomadic tribe, tried to invade the northwest China during the Han period. (202 BCE – 220 CE)

(b)Describe two external threats faced by ancient Indian or Chinese societies?

- Two external threats faced by the ancient Indian society would be foreign invasions and the rivalry between Indian kingdoms. One example of foreign invasion is the Khyber Pass in the northwest of ancient India. An example for the Rivalry between Indian kingdoms would be when the kingdoms in the southern part of India fought against each other because if they won the war, they would get to control the southern part of India which was the centre of trade. Thus whomever that controls it would have much wealth for their kingdom.

(c)Explain three measures taken by the ancient societies to respond to the external threats

- The ancient Indians built physical barriers and armies, they applied diplomacy and integration. As for the ancient Chinese they formed a tribute system, built physical barriers armies and also developed advanced weapons. For example, during the Qin dynasty (221-206 BCE) hundred of thousands of people were forced to leave their families and homes for years to build the “Great Wall”. Which is a physical barrier against the Nomads. They worked for long hours without pay. Many of them also died and were buried in the clay inside the wall. In India the town and cities had very tall walls to keep out foreign invasions. Enormous wooden walls with 64 gates and 572 watchtowers surrounded, Pataliputra, the capital of the Mauryan Empire during the 3rd century BCE.
